Parlo Industrial Group Vice President of Commerce:

“Construction projects should be initiated to boost the consumption of pre-painted sheets”

“One of the major consumers of pre-painted sheets, construction projects have not been initiated over the recent years, affecting production industries. Increasing liquidity and allocating more budget to construction projects will support the production of pre-painted sheets,” said Dariush Moradi, vice president of commerce in Parlo Industrial Group.

“Sandwich panels made with pre-painted sheets are the main products of Parlo,” said Dariush Moradi in an interview with FelezatOnline. “These panels are composed of three layers of polyurethane, polystyrene, and mineral wool. We are the only producer of sandwich panels with mineral wool as insulation. The group also has a mineral wool production facility whose output is used to produce sandwich panels in the main factory.

“Parlo Industrial Group buys galvanized sheets from domestic or foreign producers and paints them as ordered by customers in its production lines; these sheets are then used to produce sandwich panels.

“Many producers of sandwich panels have to buy pre-painted sheets from the free market or the IME, leading to a number of issues and challenges. Parlo, however, produces its own pre-painted galvanized sheets with any kind of paint the customer wants.”

We are operating at a fifth of our capacity

Moradi mentioned that Parlo Industrial Group can produce 160-170 thousand tonnes of pre-painted sheets per year, adding: “Due to economic problems in the country, about 20-25% of our capacity is being utilized. We can ramp up production if we find export markets and sell our products to major domestic construction projects. But with these economic problems and insufficient working capital, we are operating at a fifth of our nameplate capacity.”

He went on to describe the production process for pre-painted sheets: “As the main raw material, galvanized sheets are fed to the painting line where they first undergo chemical washing and steaming to be clean and prepared for the next steps. The sheets are then painted according to customer order, before being baked in a furnace. The galvanized coils are unwound at the start of the production line and then are re-wound after the painting process is completed.”

Moradi said that the pre-painted sheets are then transferred to the final production line that produces sandwich panels: “Here, sandwich panels are produced with different thicknesses, dimensions, and colors according to customer orders. The three layers mentioned earlier, namely polyurethane, polystyrene, and mineral wool, are added to the final product according to customer orders.”

Challenges with raw material procurement due to economic instability

“Parlo mostly needs 0.4mm galvanized sheets, which is bought from the free market. We try to buy from top brands such as Mobarakeh, Amir Kabir, Seven Diamonds, etc. to keep our customers satisfied. We sometimes buy directly from some of these companies, except Mobarakeh. We buy equally from the market and producers.”

When asked why the company does not buy directly from Mobarakeh, Moradi explained: “To buy from Mobarakeh, we have to be on the IME, which has certain requirements. Buyers place their orders and will receive their products after three months; their capital will be retained for three months. We are already dealing with low working capital, so we would rather buy Mobarakeh’s products from the free market.

“With the current economic problems and especially exchange rate fluctuations, we have serious issues with raw material procurement. After receiving orders from customers and delivering them in 10-15 days, we might have to buy galvanized sheets at higher prices than the products we just sold, or sheet producers might not even sell any sheets at all. These problems have caused great difficulties for us over the past couple of years and we have not been able to deliver to our customers on time.”

We can produce different types of sandwich panels.

“A large part of pre-painted sheets produced by the company is used to produce sandwich panels for roofs, ceilings, and shipping containers with different thicknesses according to customer orders. In extremely cold climates, sandwich panels with polyurethane insulation are used. Sandwich panels with mineral wool insulation are used to block heat and sound. Sandwich panels are used in the walls and ceilings of almost all industrial buildings in Iran.

“Many construction projects in the country, which are major consumers of pre-painted sheets and sandwich panels, have been put on halt due to low budgets and liquidity. Many project owners would like to work with us on long-term contracts, but we can’t do that due to insufficient working capital.

“Naturally, the managers and owners of projects are dealing with financial problems of their own under the current economic circumstances; they can’t use cash to run their projects and prefer to shift liquidity problems onto producers. But producers need sufficient working capital to work on long-term contracts.”

Moradi said that there is good demand for sandwich panels in foreign markets: “There is great demand for our products in neighboring countries as well as the Persian Gulf States and Eurasian countries. The economic instability is the main obstacle to exports. Internal problems in the company including low working capital also impede exports. We hope these problems will be resolved gradually and the company will reach full capacity utilization with exports. Given the massive global demand, exports will definitely be an option in the future.”

Producers need stability

Moradi talked about the economic instability in Iran: “There are a lot of risks to production with the current state of the economy; one has to be very bold to invest in production. All producers want from government officials and policymakers is economic stability. Exchange rate fluctuations over the past couple of years have dealt a serious blow to the economy and industries.”

Regarding government support for producers, Moradi said: “Some organizations such as the Iranian Social Security Organization and the Iranian National Tax Administration can boost their support for real producers. Banks can offer more financial facilities at lower interest rates to producers and ignore cumbersome regulations. If these things happen, there will be some hope for the country’s economic outlook. We should keep in mind that industry is the driving power of the economy.

“When the industry is hurt, so is the economy along with it. Policymakers can support producers, especially in getting low-interest financial facilities, so that they can increase their working capital to be better able to cope with the current circumstances. Private-sector producers are smart enough to be able to find their way when they get proper support.”
