MSC's HRSG project posts 90 percent progress

Metalsnews: A project to build a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) next to the natural gas-powered power plant of Mobarakeh Steel Company (MSC) is ready for launch, the executive director of the steelmaker's energy and fluid projects said.

Installation of the equipment of the HRSG project, which is designed to cut back on natural gas consumption, is complete and the project has posted 90 percent progress, Alireza Estaki said.
He further said construction of gas power plants on a large scale is economical only when the 550° C heat that leaves the power station is tapped. Around the world, including in Iran, this is accomplished through a variety of methods such as combined cycle or heat recovery steam generator.
He said construction of a gas power plant in Mobarakeh Steel Company opens up an opportunity to recycle heat and added in the current circumstances, the application of HRSG in order to supply superheat steam will not only cut energy consumption but will reduce environmental pollution. Besides, in light of the agreement signed with the Industrial Development and Renovation Organization (IDRO), this project has paved the way for the company to receive loans under the Kyoto Protocol because it cuts CO2 emissions.
As for the economic advantages of the project, he said studies suggest production of each ton of superheat steam requires 82 Nm3/h of gas. That means the launch of the project will save up to 90 million Nm3/h of natural gas and some 170 billion rials in spending.
Estaki went on to say that in the development of the boiler the potential of domestic companies to build major equipment as well as side equipment such as cable, electrical enclosures, etc. has been fully tapped.
As for the technical specifications of the project, he said, the boiler project – capable of producing 170 tons of superheat steam per hour – sits on a 1,500 m2 expanse of land next to the power plant that runs on natural gas and has drawn more than 420 billion rials in investment. When the project is fully operational, one of the five boilers of the steam plant will be taken off the grid and its capacity can be used to partly supply the steam needed at the steam power plant.
In order for the project to become fully operational, the gas power plant needs to be shut down for 45 days, he said, adding the shutdown will take place at the best possible time according to schedule without disrupting production.
In conclusion, Estaki thanked the Project Execution Division, Senior Management for Technical Services and Logistics, Management of the Energy and Fluids Department, Steel Engineering Company and MAPNA Boiler and Isfahan Power Maintenance Company which served as contractor of the project.
