“Using green utilities can drive winding wire consumption”

The green debate has been around for years now. In this Insider Talk, we look into the advantages of using green utilities beyond their environmental benefits. It is common knowledge that using electric vehicles (EVs) or the subway will help minimize human carbon footprint, but this talk takes the perspective of producers of electric equipment, winding wire in particular. This week’s guest is Ali Qomi Oskooi, CEO of Rama Parsian Industries Co.

How does using green utilities affect the consumption of winding wire?

The production of green utilities, with the aim of keeping pollution levels down, can drive the consumption of winding wire. As usage of electrical products increases, so does the consumption of winding wire; the industry will grow and more jobs will be created. Take for instance the replacement of manual crank handles with power windows in the manufacturing of domestic vehicles for the last ten years; winding wire consumption jumped. Electricity is an indispensable component of modern life. Electrical appliances facilitate daily chores and drive the consumption of winding wire, because it is used in rotors, stators, and transformers.

Is the production of winding wire harmful to the environment? Are there any requirements?

The winding wire industry is not a polluting one provided that all machinery is operating normally and there is proper supervision. The weather directly affects the quality of winding wires during production, so plants need to be immaculately clean.

Is the shortage of raw materials an obstacle to ramping up production?

We don’t have raw materials issues as far as copper is concerned, but it’s a different story with the insulation polymer. Winding wire production is not very common in Iran for the technical knowledge and expertise as well as its specific requirements. At least 5,000 tonnes of winding wire needs to be consumed domestically to economically justify the production of the polymer, according to foreign consultants and experts; Iran’s domestic annual consumption is less than 3,000 tonnes. Thus, the insulation polymer has to be imported. In order to maintain the value chain, producers need easier import for mass production. With the status quo of sanctions, it is very difficult for banks to exchange currencies and make transactions with European banks. In such economic conditions as these, importing insulation polymer is a serious issue.

What’s the market like these days?

Producers have no difficulty meeting domestic demand. The quality of domestic products obviates the import of foreign winding wire. It is a strategic product with strong demand; the market is thriving. But production is lagging behind profitability-wise due to issues of raw materials availability. As far as the domestic market is concerned, production outstrips demand. The quality of Iranian products is on a par with European standards, which makes export easily possible. Currently, export is not significant due to high production costs.

What sizes of winding wire are produced in Iran?

Over 99% of domestic demand is met through domestic production. Iranian producers have a wide range of winding wire sizes. Import accounts for only 1% of domestic demand. Due to the unavailability of raw materials, technological shortfalls, and low domestic consumption, small-sized winding wire is not produced in Iran. Products with thickness smaller than 0.1 mm are hardly produced or consumed.

What kind of wirerod is best for the production of small winding wires?

These wires are only as thick as a strand of hair, so the wirerod used to produce them needs to withstand tensile stress. Moreover, the added value of such winding wires is so small as to make it unattractive to producers.

Where do Iranian products stand in terms of technology and quality?

There are a set of global standards for the production of winding wires. Iranian producers are using the latest technology and machinery to produce high-quality winding wires. I would even go as far as saying Iranian winding wire surpasses foreign products.

How does quality matter in winding wires?

Flexible wires have less production scrap. Also, the quality of lacquer is crucial in the overall quality of winding wires. By lacquer quality I mean not only the chemical composition, but also the even tolerance of the coating. Any irregularity in the coating can lead to motor failures. Consumers buy their preferred domestic brands specific to their needs. Most often consumers test winding wires themselves.

What is your annual output?

Rama produces 5,000 tonnes of different winding wires with different sizes and insulations. We produce both copper and aluminum conductors with round and flat cross sections. The development of the winding wire industry is convenient in Iran owing to copper mines. Furthermore, we could develop types not currently produced.
