Sanctions on Iran's Steel Industry

“With recent government directives, big mines are prohibited from exporting, while small-scale mines in the private sector are facing issues such as import duties and sanctions for exporting their products. These problems will be further complicated with the new round of sanctions on the steel industry,” said Mehrdad Akbarian, Head of the Iron Ore Association of Iran.

Insider Talk: Sanctions vs ‌Steel

Due to the sanctions on the metals industry, exports as well as imports of products have been extremely difficult. Those working in the steel industry believe that when the domestic industry is under pressure from the outside, it is ever more important to focus on domestic capacities and the development of production, construction, civil projects, and new investments. We have had an opportunity to interact with Assadolah Farshad, CEO of Iranian Ghadir Iron & Steel, for this Insider Talk.

Self-sufficiency in Pelletizing

Self-sufficiency in Pelletizing

Goharzamin Iron Ore was established in 2004 to exploit Gol-e-Gohar’s iron ore deposit no. 3. Mining operations of 75 million tonnes per year (15 million tonnes of iron ore and 60 million tonnes of tailings) were performed to produce 10 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate and 10 million tonnes of pellets as feed for steel plants as part of the 20-year vision for the steel industry; about three thousand jobs (direct and indirect) were created. The company is currently working on the massive project of a pelletizing plant with a capacity of five million tonnes; the implementation of the project will significantly help the steel industry in the country. Our guest in this Insider Talk is Akbar Pooriani, CEO of Goharzamin.

Sungun Is Helping Local Development

Sungun Is Helping Local Development

The third development phase of Sungun Copper Complex is underway following a prolonged pause. Started a few years ago, the project was supposed to be the main driver of development in East Azerbaijan; the province holds massive reserves, a large part of which has remained unidentified. When discovered and exploited, these reserves will make Sungun one of the largest copper projects in the world. Domestic demand for copper and NICICO’s unused cathode production capacity have accelerated the third phase of Sungun’s concentration project; the company is also eyeing the smelting project, which had been left unfinished for the past ten years. But the managers of NICICO have been trying to resume the project for the past two years. For this Insider Talk, we have interviewed Reza Sharifi, manager of Sungun Copper Complex.
